Sunshine, Scrap Metal, and Community
A Day of Sunshine, Scrap Metal, and Community Spirit
On Saturday, August 15, the grounds at Zion came alive with the rumble of pickup trucks, the clang of metal, and the sound of neighbors greeting one another. Our scrap metal drive turned out to be more than a fundraiser. It was a reminder of what a community can do when it shows up for one another.
Hope After Flood
It has been a challenging season for our congregation. Repeated flooding left our building with significant damage, and our fellowship hall, the room where we gather for coffee hour, Martha’s Kitchen, and Repair Cafe, now needs major repairs. The road ahead is long, and has felt heavy.
The Scrap Drive lifted our spirits in a way we hadn't expected. The weather was beautiful and sunny, and we were overwhelmed by community support. Parishioners worked side by side with friends and neighbors who came out to help.
Thank You, Avon
To everyone who loaded up a truck, cleaned out a garage or barn, or drove across town with a few pieces of metal in their backseat -thank you! Every single piece counts, and the community turnout far exceeded our hopes. Seeing so many people give their time and effort to support our church was a true blessing, and it was a vivid picture of the love and care that make this community special.
We are pleased to share that the drive has raised more than $2,000 so far, a wonderful start toward restoring our fellowship hall.
Caring for Creation
There is something fitting about a fundraiser like this one. As people of faith, we are called to be good stewards of the earth and all that has been entrusted to us. What began as discarded items sitting in sheds and yards became a gift, both to the planet and to our church family. Caring for creation and caring for one another went hand in hand.
A Special Thanks to Metalico Rochester
We are especially grateful to Metalico Rochester for their generous assistance with this fundraiser.
We are already planning another one, and in the meantime, if you have scrap metal you'd like to put to good use, you can take it directly to Metalico in Rochester and ask to have the funds deposited into the Zion Church, Avon account. Every ounce goes directly to supporting the missions of Zion Church.
With Grateful Hearts
Rebuilding takes time, but days like August 15 remind us that we are not rebuilding alone. We are surrounded by neighbors, friends, and partners who care.
From all of us at Zion Episcopal Church, thank you for the sunshine, the hard work, and the love you showed us.
We can't wait to see you at the next one.
